Chemists working in Pfizer's laboratory in England  made a compound for studying its effect on patients with high blood pressure and angina. They called this compound UK-92, 480. Research scientists found the chemical to be hardly effective

in the treatment of high blood pressure and angina, but it caused remarkable penile erection. 

This chemical, termed sildenafil citrate, was patented in 1996.

FDA approved this drug for use in the treatment of erectile dysfunction on March 27, 1998.

Sildenafil citrate was advertised by Pfizer under the brand name Viagra directly to the public on television.
